Vandals Win This Homecoming Weekend

By Nicole Hindberg on October 22, 2018

This weekend was homecoming for the Vandals at the University of Idaho. The weekend started out with the yearly traditions of the homecoming bonfire and fireworks. Both were highly successful events that brought out thousands of current Vandals and alumni.

The next morning featured the fireman’s breakfast and homecoming parade. The fireman’s breakfast was a way for the community to get together before the parade and support our firemen. Following the breakfast, hundreds of floats went down Main Street. Many floats featured volunteers who threw out candy to the excited children. Turning it into a fun distraction for the children so they don’t get bored.

After the parade, the students and alumni headed to the dome where the Vandals took on Southern Utah. In the pregame show, the University of Idaho Marching Band along with high school marching bands from around the state took to the field and put on a show for the excited football fans.

The coin toss came from Hall-of-Famer Jerry Kramer. Kramer was a former vandal that lead him to his NFL career with the Packers. It was a historic moment that made the stadium go crazy for him.

The game featured many exciting plays by the Vandals who dominated southern Utah with a win of 31-12. Without a single point on the board from Southern Utah until the fourth quarter. The Vandals held them off for most of the game. But it still wasn’t enough on Southern Utah’s part to win the game against the Vandals. The game was also a historic moment for wide receiver Cutrell Haywood. Within the first quarter, Haywood scored the first touchdown of the game. He broke the previous record for the number of touchdowns a freshmen wide receiver in a single game. He broke the previous record of three touchdowns with his four touchdowns of the game. The announcers praised Haywood throughout the game for this reason. Which was clearly understandable because of his fantastic performance.

Haywood, along with many other players had a fantastic performance against Southern Utah, but Haywood’s stood out in comparison to all other Vandals. It was a successful season for the Vandals. Their reputation of being “one of the worst teams” is slowly changing with the Vandals trying to pull themselves out of that slump. Many are optimistic, and many are not that they can do this.

All in all, this was an exciting weekend for the Vandals. The weekend was packed full of successful events that brought out thousands of fans and alumni. It was a success for everyone involved and the homecoming committee is already excited to plan for next year.
