How You Know You And Your Roommate Could Star In Your Own Sitcom

By Victoria Robertson on April 20, 2016

Living with a roommate is both a blessing and a curse, but when it comes time to graduate, you’ll have created one of the most important friendships of your entire life, for better or worse. So while there are ups and downs to living with someone else, the roller coaster ride only works to make your relationship stronger in the end.

And for those of you that are close with your roommate, you know better than anyone what that means. You know the best and worst of one another, and through thick and thin, you’ve got each other’s back, in true sitcom fashion.

So how do you know if you and your roommate fit the criteria? Here’s how you know you and your roommate could star in your own sitcom.

1. You don’t always see eye-to-eye.

Not all roommates get along all the time, and you aren’t the exception. While most of your time together is really good, other times leave you pulling out your hair. But if you think about it, when you spend almost every minute of every day with someone, you’re bound to have a few disagreements. So with that under consideration, you’re actually doing a pretty great job!

2. You finish each other’s sentences.

But when you do see eye-to-eye, things are fantastic. People often refer to you as siblings or “one of a kind,” and you couldn’t agree more. You both share the same opinion on almost everything, and it makes both of you closer in the long run.

3. You have daily rituals.

While your schedules change daily, you also have certain rituals that you always squeeze in, no matter how busy you are. So whether it’s eating a meal together or sitting down to a Thursday night TV show, your roommate rituals mean a lot to both of you.

4. You tell each other about your day.

When you can’t wait to get home to tell your roommate about your day, you know it’s a friendship that’s meant to be. Sometimes you saw something funny, or maybe just spotted a giant squirrel on the quad, but no matter what the day’s events, you look forward to telling your roommate all about them, and they look forward to the exact same thing.

5. You laugh together.

When the good times are rolling, you can’t contain yourselves. Laughter is the best medicine, and when you live with a roommate that you get along with, the laughter rarely stops. Sometimes it’s an inside joke and other times there’s no reason at all, but no matter the reason, you’re both happy to be around each other and you aren’t afraid to show it, either.

6. You cry together.

On that same note, not all of life’s moments are good. Sometimes, you just need a good cry, and your roommate is there for you when you do. They’ll cry with you, or talk you through it, but they show you that they’re there for you, and though you don’t say it often, it’s much appreciated. And whenever you can reciprocate, you better believe you’re there for them.

7. You miss them when they’re gone.

It sounds dumb, and probably a little clingy, but when your roommate is gone, you can’t help but miss them, and vice versa. You spend most of your time together, so when the other person is missing, it throws you off, and makes life a lot more boring. But even though you spend the time missing them, it makes the fun times brought on by their return all that much better.

8. You complain to each other.

Most importantly, you can vent to one another about your day, relationships or even just life in general, and there’s no judgment at all. Or, maybe there is sometimes, but you don’t mind because you have someone that will listen, no matter what. Having a person that you can always turn to, through good and bad times, is one of the most important things that you can have in life, and that’s what roommates are for.

Whether you know it yet or not, you’ve found a friend for life, and if sitcoms have told us anything about friendship, there isn’t anything better in the world.
