Fashion Advice From Your Favorite Movies

By Janey Dike on August 26, 2014

Television has given us some of the most useful and most quotable fashion advice.

While the style-related lines from our favorite movies and stars were meant to generate laughs or show off the characters’ personalities, we can still apply the lessons to our everyday lives.

You’ve probably heard most of these lines in your lifetime … now it’s time to follow the advice.

“Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.” -Elle Woods, “Legally Blonde”

Elle Woods obviously has her own unique sense of style. She has just as much confidence as she does pink articles of clothing. A great lesson to learn from Elle is that you should wear whatever you feel good in, even if you have to break the rules.

The star of “Legally Blonde” understands that you don’t always have to listen to the latest trends or follow the many rules of fashion. Try telling Elle to switch her color palette to orange. She’ll stay true to herself and true to pink.

“Smilers wear a crown, losers wear a frown.” - Victor Melling, “Miss Congeniality”

While main character Gracie Hart probably didn’t love this advice in “Miss Congeniality,” the line has some truth.

Even outside of the pageant world, it’s important to remember that looks aren’t always based on the makeup you put on or the clothes you wear. Having a smile on your face and a positive outlook on life can do wonders for your appearance, inside and out.

A smile will give you more confidence and attractiveness than a new skirt or shade of lipstick will ever be able to do. So make sure to wear your “crown” the next time you want to rock your latest outfit.

“I like my money right where I can see it … hanging in my closet” -Carrie Bradshaw, “Sex in the City”

Carrie let us know that it’s okay to be passionate about our fashion. If that means investing in a spectacular wardrobe or a collection of the best beauty supplies, then so be it.

While it’s probably not a good idea to spend, spend, spend all at once, picking up a nice pair of leather boots or a cashmere sweater in your favorite color every once in a while won’t break your budget.

Some people invest their money in furniture, cars, property, or antique items. If you want to see value in your clothing or jewelry, don’t be afraid to be like Carrie and treat yourself to the best. (Just remember to budget wisely!)

“He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship?” -Cher Horowitz, “Clueless”

For anyone that has seen “Clueless,” you know that you’ll never meet anyone like Cher Horowitz. Cher has very high standards for fashion and a very theatrical outlook on life.

While you probably won’t agree with every opinionated word that she says, Cher does have some good points. Even though a relationship obviously isn’t based solely off of a partner’s attire or appearance, dressing well can be a great first impression.

Just as someone who dresses to the nines may attract your eye in class or at a party, you can stand out of a crowd with a great outfit that you feel comfortable wearing.

“Is that your natural hair color?…It’s gorgeous.”- Damian, “Mean Girls”

“Mean Girls” is arguably one of the most quotable movies of our generation. Even after ten years, friends still think it’s hilarious to say “you can’t sit with us” at lunch and criticize friends that don’t wear pink on Wednesdays.

Damian sends a great message during one of his first conversations with Cady Heron. Right away he notices her beautiful natural features. Lots of people, both men and women, don’t give their natural beauty enough credit.

With constant advertisements and over-the-top photoshopped celebrities constantly being flashed in our faces, it can be hard to remember what’s real and what isn’t. No one actually looks like the models in the magazines. Wearing more makeup or dyeing your hair can make you look different, but it doesn’t necessarily look better than your natural appearance.

Damian recognized the beauty in Cady’s natural hair even before she became a Plastic.

“When I shop, the world gets better, and the world is better, but then it’s not, and I need to do it again.” -Rebecca Bloomwood, “Confessions of a Shopaholic”

While a little retail therapy with friends can be great for bonding and put you in a good mood, it’s important that you don’t depend on shopping as a way to deal with issues.

While purchasing something and hanging up new items in your closet may make you temporarily happy, the feeling won’t last. Not only will splurging on clothes not fix your problems, it will also be quite expensive.
